San Francisco

What makes this San Francisco golf course so special? The setting: grounds that wind through stunning eucalyptus trees and Monterey pine groves within a spectacular national park.

It was one of those days. A steady San Francisco downpour that soaked the city and made the streets glisten in grey light. I’d very nearly convinced myself to curl up in my hotel room and watch the Golf Channel, but I felt summoned. Presidio’s scorecard, with its perfect aerial photo of the course and the Golden Gate, was burned in my mind. I heeded the call.

I had faith that the site’s natural beauty would provide for a unique experience on a stormy day, so I grabbed my rain gear and made my way there. Presidio was eerily quiet, with only a handful of golfers. The drizzly soundscape of white noise was soothing, as if the green was holding its breath. I was paired with a member (shoutout to Albert!) who decided to play from the reds with me on that day. We had an awesome round. One that I will remember for a long time.
Presidio Golf Course in the heart of San Francisco is a testament to the city’s rich history, natural beauty and deep-rooted love of the game. It’s not just a place to play; it’s a sanctuary where history, scenery and sport combine to offer locals and visitors a rare golf experience. It invites seasoned golfers and beginners to step into a world of dramatic views and challenging fairways.

The 13th hole, a gorgeous par 3 and an impeccable window onto SF (when the clouds shifted for a few minutes), was a highlight. As a bonus, I made a great impression on Albert when I hit the ball just a few feet from the pin.

In the middle of the course is the General Store. On weekends, the snack shack serves burgers and hotdogs on an outdoor grill. I built my burger and followed the chef’s excellent recommendation to add the General Store’s own secret sauce. It was a happy surprise for a hungry (and soaked) golfer like me.
The beauty of Presidio Golf Course lies in its design and its location. Set within the 1,500-acre Presidio National Park, it treats golfers to panoramic views of the iconic Golden Gate Bridge, sparkling waters of San Francisco Bay and rolling hills that define the city’s landscape.

The tranquil environment, lush fairways and towering cypress trees are a rare oasis in the heart of the bustling urban centre. The landscape is an integral part of the experience, with a varied terrain that weaves through natural dunes and old-growth forests. The course offers a dynamic challenge, with strategically placed bunkers, doglegs and elevation changes that keep players on their toes with awe-inspiring backdrops at every turn.
In a city known for its landmarks and vibrant culture, Presidio Golf Course stands out as one of San Francisco’s finest treasures, a peaceful escape in the middle of one of the world’s most iconic urban settings.
